Robert Cringely schreef weer eens een column die je even heel anders naar de lopende mondiale ontwikkelingen laat kijken. Een paar fragmenten uit zijn prima leesbare verhaal:

(…) What I find interesting is that most people just take it as bible truth that China will be the next superpower because it is so number-oriented (huge infrastructure dollars, huge manufacturing dollars, higher per capital wealth than India, bigger middle class, etc…). (…)

China has all those factories and all that money (our money — isn’t that the way we tend to see it?). China also cheated itself out of a generation through overzealous population control, which might be good for the globe but is bad for hegemony. But the biggest reason why India will win and China will lose is the Chinese stay to themselves too much. They don’t assimilate.

Look at the world’s multinational companies. Compare their executives of Indian and Chinese nationality or descent. Indian executives are everywhere. Chinese executives are nowhere.

De Financial Times (reg. req.) haalt vandaag een door Vodafone gesponsord onderzoek aan naar de status van de internetpenetratie.

“(…) India, Asia’s third-largest economy, has less than 5 per cent internet penetration and only 0.4 per cent in broadband services. In some states, such as Bihar and Assam, internet was almost non-existent, research said.

Across the country, about 32m mobile subscribers access the internet through wireless networks, alongside 11m people who access it through fixed-line technology.

Restricted internet access lags a booming mobile phone market, which now numbers about 350m users.

Mobile subscribers are rising by a staggering 10m a month, but teledensity – the number of telephones in use per 100 people – is 32 per cent in India, below neighbours Pakistan and Sri Lanka. (…)”

Anekdotisch bewijs 1: de iPhone is een ronduit slechte mobiele fotocamera. Toch is het op Flickr de nummer 5 onder de populairste kiekjesschieter. Bewijsstuk 2: In Nederland lijkt aan de mobiele interface ook niet ontkoombaar. In september zei Hyves’ Yme Bosma dat hij verwacht dat over 5 jaar de mobiele telefoon de primaire interface tot de profielensite zal zijn. Als dat voor Hyves geldt, zal een grote andere groep op zijn minst vólgen.
