Van eind februari tot begin maart vindt in San Francisco weer de O’Reilly Emerging Telephony Conference plaats. De conferentie gaat over innovatie rondom telefonie. Tim O’Reilly, eigenaar van de organiserende uitgeverij, meldt de conferentie op de mailinglijst van David Farber en wijst op een sessie die twee jaar geleden nooit plaats had kunnen vinden:
“(…) Another very cool session at the conference is a workshop entitled Calls in the Utility Computing Cloud – Experiments in on demand ultra scalable telephony Using Amazon EC2 and S3 – This is freeswitch and Asterisk both – This is really exciting stuff. They are using Ec2 to create on demand scalable phone networks – something that was not possible before. You basically had to over-specify and pray your network never reached capacity. (…)”
De sessie bewijst dat een bedrijf, of voor wat dat aangaat een individu, voor nul euro een telefoonsysteem (Asterisk) kan krijgen en dat kan bouwen op een vreselijk schaalbaar en bovendien spotgoedkoop basissysteem. Nu nog gaan dit soort systemen voor tonnen en tonnen over de toonbank.
Uitgeverij O’Reilly stapte zelf pas geleden ook over van een traditioneel systeem voor bedrijfstelefonie (PBX) naar het open source Asterisk. Tim O’Reilly schrijft over de besparingen:
“(…) I was talking with CJ Rayhill, our CIO, the other day, and she pointed out that when evaluating new PBX alternatives, we’d gotten several $200,000+ proposals for proprietary systems. Asterisk was not only free, the VoIP switch has allowed us to increase our network bandwidth fourfold to accomodate the voice traffic (and more data traffic) yet still save $5000/month.
I’ve been puzzled why there isn’t more focus on asterisk in the open source world, as it seems to me to be one of the really big new open source success stories. (…)”
